Police Investigate After Town Discovers It Has Been Sharing One Driver's License Since 2019
The license has changed hands more than four hundred times. Nobody involved thinks this is unusual.
Faketown Police confirmed Monday they are investigating reports that a single driver's license, issued to resident Harold Beeman in 2019, has been informally passed among at least eleven residents whenever one of them needed to drive somewhere.
Officer Priya Nandan, who opened the inquiry after pulling over a driver who did not resemble his own photo ID "in any respect," said the license had changed hands so many times that its lamination has worn through in the shape of a thumb.
"At first we assumed it was one person with a very unusual face," Nandan said. "It was not one person."
Beeman, reached for comment, said he lends out the license "whenever someone asks nicely," and keeps a small notebook to track who currently has it. The notebook, when reviewed by investigators, listed "Dave, again" for most of the past year.
The Faketown DMV said it has no formal process for addressing the situation, noting only that the license "technically has not expired" and that renewing it "would require Harold to have it, which is rarely the case."
